Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was released from a Texas prison Friday (October 16) after serving seven years of her 10-year sentence for murdering Botham Jean in his apartment in 2018.

NBC News reported that Guyger was scheduled to leave prison Friday, nearly three years before her sentence was set to expire. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles approved her release after she served seven years of her sentence.

The parole board cited Guyger’s prison conduct, lack of a documented pattern of violent criminal behavior, and completion of rehabilitation programs designed to help her find and maintain employment, according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth. The board denied her first parole request in 2024.

Guyger, 38, was convicted of murder in October 2019 for fatally shooting Jean, a 26-year-old Black accountant. During her trial, she testified that she mistakenly entered Jean’s apartment, believing it was her own, and shot him because she thought he was an intruder.

Her release does not end her sentence. CBS News reported that Guyger will remain under parole supervision until her sentence expires in 2029. Her supervision includes regular check-ins, home visits, travel restrictions, and employment requirements.

Guyger is also prohibited from living in Dallas County or contacting Jean’s family and Dallas police officers. She cannot leave Texas without approval from authorities, according to CBS News Texas.
