Chicago Sky star Angel Reese clapped back at a misogynistic troll while continuing the ongoing conversation about the disparity in WNBA pay.
On Thursday (October 2), Reese took to X, formerly Twitter, to share photos from a recent offseason trip, where she appeared to be posing in a swimsuit on a boat. While many fans showed love, one user questioned her commitment to the league.
"Do you want to be an Instagram model or a WNBA player?" they wrote.
Reese didn't hold back in her response to the troll.
“Well no I’ll never pick because my dream job doesn’t pay me enough while my side job pays me 7 figures. Anywayyy…..go check out my new episode 😘,” she wrote.
Reese’s clapback highlights the ongoing conversation about the massive pay gap between the WNBA and NBA. Reese, who earns a $73,439 base salary with the Sky, has previously admitted it barely covers essentials like rent and transportation, forcing her to rely on endorsements, podcasting, and other off-court opportunities to make ends meet.
Despite the WNBA's rising viewership, sponsorships, and cultural relevance, most players earn a fraction of what their NBA counterparts do. While NBA players receive close to 50 percent of basketball-related income, WNBA players currently receive less than 10 percent of their league's revenue.
Players at this year’s WNBA All-Star Game expressed their frustrations by wearing shirts that read “Pay Us What You Owe Us.” After the Minnesota Lynx’s recent exit from the playoffs, Napheesa Collier revealed that WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert once told players they should be “on their knees” thanking her for media deals that help them earn endorsement money, reigniting the conversation about pay disparity.
