Former Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance at a California high school graduation after receiving a special invitation from a student.
On Thursday (June 5), Harris made a cameo at the Compton High School graduation, surprising students as she arrived in her black SUV with tinted windows, per Politico.
“Is that Beyoncé?” one onlooker asked before the former VP emerged from her vehicle.
Harris was invited to the commencement by Myshay Causey, a senior and student board member of the Compton Unified School District. In April, Causey worked an event attended by Harris' husband, Douglas Emhoff, and gave him a handwritten letter for his wife, describing how she had inspired her. Causey and Harris later spoke on the phone, and during the call, the Compton senior invited her to attend the upcoming graduation.
On Thursday, Harris spent the hour-long ceremony on stage before nearly 300 graduates and their families.
“It’s not often you get somebody from Compton North — Oakland — hanging out with us here in the CPT,” Micah Ali, president of the Compton Unified school board, said during the ceremony. Ali later gave Harris an honorary degree as the “first graduate” of the school’s new campus.
During her speech, Causey said her peers had inspired her to write a “full-page essay” about her high school experiences. The senior graduate said she wrote about “how if anyone showed up here at Compton High, they would be so proud of the people coming out of and surprised because it’s way different than what other people have ever said about us."
