An 11-year-old boy in Mississippi was shot by police after calling 911 for help.

The shooting of Aderrien Murry, 11, unfolded on Saturday (May 20) when police responded to a domestic disturbance call at his home. His mother, Nakala Murry, had asked Aderrien to call 911 after the father of one of her children showed up at their home "irate" at 4 a.m.

According to the mother, Officer Greg Capers arrived at their front door with his gun drawn and asked for everyone to step outside of the home. Nakala said her son was shot in the chest as he was following the officer's orders.

“Once [Aderrien] came from around the corner, he got shot,” she said. “I cannot grasp why. The same cop that told [us] to come out of the house. [Aderrien] did, and he got shot. He kept asking, ‘Why did he shoot me? What did I do wrong?'”

The father of Nakala's daughter was taken into custody but later released because the mom didn't file a police report. Aderrien was taken to a local hospital after sustaining injuries from the shooting including a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, and a lacerated liver.

On Thursday (May 25), CNN reported that the boy was released from the hospital.

The family is calling for the firing and arrest of Capers, who was placed on administrative leave amid an investigation into the incident. The shooting was captured in body camera footage, which has not been released, according to the family's attorney.

“We believe that the city and the officer should be liable to Aderrien Murray for the damages they have caused,” attorney Carlos Moore said.
