The 59th Presidential Inauguration will go down as a day to remember in American history. With President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris taking over for Mike Pence and Donald Trump, there is a lot of work ahead. However, today offers the opportunity to celebrate the journey that both Biden and Harris have taken en route to the White House. Biden has endured two failed presidential campaigns and the pain of losing a son. Meanwhile, Harris has overcome the odds of simply being a Black woman in American society. Not only has she made history as the first Black California attorney general, but she also became the first Black woman from California to serve in the United States Senate. Today, she breaks barriers as the first Black and Asian-American woman to serve as Vice President. However, the "firsts" don't end there.
Stepping into the White House, Harris represents a portion of Black American culture that hasn't been present in the Vice President's office before. She is a graduate of a historically Black institution known as Howard University. Harris is also a soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Taking the next step in her career, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. honored Harris as she makes history by recognizing January 20 as "Kamala D. Harris Day."
"January 20 has been declared Kamala D. Harris Day! To celebrate our [soror], wear shades of pink and your favorite strand of pearls to acknowledge this historic moment," the sorority tweeted.
Joining Harris at the ceremony, Rep. Terri Sewell donned all pink and green attire on Inauguration Day. Across social media platforms, sorors from all walks of life joined in on the celebration. Holding this honor, Harris not only represents herself, but she also represents HBCU graduates, members of Divine 9 fraternities and sororities and much more.
